The Lunar Zodiac Series follows the moon through all 12 signs of the tropical zodiac over the course of one lunation. It is an exploration of the The Hermetic Principle of Correspondence “As above so below” which speaks to the connection of inner and outer worlds, and the interplay between the cosmos and earth where the microcosm reflects the macrocosm and vice versa.

Knowing what sign the moon is in provides a way to connect with the astrological mood of the day as well as the shifting terrain of your own inner landscape.

The moon doesn’t “make” you feel something, but when you are in resonance with the energy of each sign, it can assist you in accessing a dimension of the archetypal energy within yourself. It can help weave more magic and meaning into your experience of reality.

Get ready for the moon to move into the depths of Scorpio.

the mood of the moon in scorpio

After seeking harmony and balance in Libra, the moon moves into the deep waters of Scorpio. There is an invitation to transmute fears and access more life force energy.

To live fully, to love fully, and feel fully, without shame or apology.

Scorpio is a fixed water sign which has more to do with having the ability to be fixated on something, to give it one’s full attention, to know something or someone by merging with them, to understand something from the inside out.

Since Scorpio is associated with shared resources - anywhere we may merge with other people through things like money, energy, bodily fluids - this can be a time to take stock of who and what we are currently merging ourselves with intentionally or unintentionally.

We can choose to investigate ways we have merged with other people and assess if our energy is still tied up with them.

When the moon is in Scorpio, it may be a helpful time to cut energetic cords or sever ties with anyone who feels like a vampire to your own life force. Declare that no one is allowed to siphon your energy, or your power. Call it back to you!

Notice how Scorpio’s sting may be less about hurting others and more about protecting your magic.

Both the Moon and Scorpio connect us with the unconscious, the subconscious operating system that may be running the show without our full awareness. What secrets are we keeping from ourselves? What fears are controlling our behavior? What primal instincts are we cut off from?

What has been sent into exile or relegated to the shadow?

Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac and is symbolized by a Scorpion, an Eagle and/or a Snake. Scorpio is traditionally ruled by Mars and has the modern ruler of Pluto. Mars lends an intensity and a power to the sign of Scorpio, which gives this water sign its fire and passion. When the Moon is in Scorpio there may be the ability to feel things more intensely, more deeply.

What is intensity anyway? Intensity can be experienced as the full power of something - not necessarily good or bad - but beyond duality in the realms of primal emotions and sensations.

To feel fully alive and embodied - this is the terrain of Scorpio. And this may evoke fear for someone who cannot yet run the full strength of power through their own body and nervous system, whether this is due to trauma or lack of training and practice or both. How can we learn to stay with intensity without collapsing?

Scorpio’s modern ruler Pluto, the Transformer, is also associated with mining - and shows us that wealth and treasure are often buried deep down inside.

The process of excavating and bringing these jewels to the surface is the gift of the sign of Scorpio. To face the darkness, the unknown, anything that is taboo or seems off limits. Notice what fears are draining your power, and if you choose - ask the universe, a therapist, or someone you trust for support in facing these fears for the benefit of your empowerment.

The mood of Scorpio is to leave no stone unturned, to dive down to the bottom of the well and shed light on what is seen as taboo: forbidden, unclean, or off limits.

The word taboo is said to be of Polynesian origin and came into the English language from Captain Cook’s Voyage to the Pacific Ocean in the late 18th century. Taboos can also be viewed as something that is too sacred and consecrated or too dangerous or powerful to engage with outside of ritual space.

What is taboo often has incredible power and energetic charge. For example: menstruation, sex, and death.

Scorpio asks: what are your own rituals around these taboos?

The energy of Scorpio is what the evolutionary astrologer Stephen Forrest calls the Phoenix consciousness. Scorpio knows that all things must die before they can be reborn. This the Dark Goddess that Demetra George writes about in her book Mysteries of the Dark Moon:

“By observing the ever-renewing display of the moon’s light, the ancients developed an intrinsic belief in rebirth.

[...] just as the moon disappeared and then reappeared, so did the seed sprout fruit, wither, disappear, and then reappear with new germination. There was no reason to think that human beings would be any different from the lunar and vegetative cycles with whose rhythms they lived in intimate harmony. As the moon’s light reemerged after its period of darkness, so would individuals be reborn into the light. This was the law of the cycle and no power could prevent its turning.

The Dark Goddess who is the embodiment of the dark phase of the moon cycle, was thus honored for her role in presiding over the mysteries and initiations of the intermediary passage between death and rebirth.”

Scorpio is like the death doula of the Zodiac, not to be feared, but to feel the support of as we each face the unknown throughout our life.

When the moon is in Scorpio you may be able to access the awareness of all of the phases that you go through in life and how you have the power to be reborn over and over and over again.

There is a sensitivity to Scorpio and a deep desire for unwavering trust. Part of the probing nature of Scorpio is to determine whether someone is truly trustworthy through and through. When the moon is in Scorpio, perhaps deepening your own self trust by expressing the truth of who you are, and investigating the motives of others.

As with all water signs we are reminded to choose how deep we want to go with the “feels.” Sometimes it’s okay to glide along the surface. It takes practice to learn how to swim.

It takes practice to be with our emotions: to not run and hide, to not try to control them, to not use them as weapons to harm others, to not be overwhelmed by them, but learn to regulate and work with them as allies in transformation.

With Scorpio there may be a mood of secretiveness, or a suspicious instinct that helps us not to take things at face value. Scorpio asks, what’s really going on?

You may have an ability to detect the emotional state of others, even if they try to hide them. The insecure side of Scorpio can bring up jealousy, wanting what others have, or feeling possessive. Jealousy is a powerful and intense emotion that can cause people to act against their own best interest, poisoning themselves from the inside.

Notice the things that make you feel jealous, and see if you can transmute or transform the power of that feeling into the love buried beneath the jealousy. What do you love so much that you want it in your life, not to take it from someone else, but to experience it for yourself?

Perhaps cultivating Mudita - or appreciative joy - one of the four practices the Buddha gave to dissolve the illusion of separation - by applauding the happiness and good fortune of others.

When the moon is in Scorpio there is an opportunity to experience the magic of transformation, the shedding of old skins, the appreciation for the small deaths throughout life that have allowed us to become who we are today.
