This Lunar Zodiac Series is an exploration of the The Hermetic Principle of Correspondence “As above so below” which speaks to the connection of inner and outer worlds, and the interplay between the cosmos and earth where the microcosm reflects the macrocosm and visa versa.

Let’s be real, the moon doesn’t “make” you feel something, but when you are in resonance with the energy of each sign, it can assist you in accessing a dimension of the archetypal energy within yourself.

the mood of the Moon in gemini

As the moon moves into the air sign of Gemini, we’re switching gears again and the pace begins to pick up - especially in the mind. Air signs are connected with mental activity: thoughts, ideas, imagination, innovation, curiosity - and this air sign exudes a particularly youthful curiosity - wanting to know who, what, where, when, why, and how?!

Gemini is the third sign of the zodiac and has Mercury as their guardian: quicksilver communication; swift shapeshifting messenger, trickster, and alchemist; the patron of early adapters; and a magician who moves between the dualities symbolized by the Twins. Two sides, two faces, two columns that form a doorway bridging above and below.

It’s the double rainbow of the zodiac showing a wide array of colors and possibilities. Anything but black and white.

When the moon is in Gemini it can be a great time to study our own mind, and how our emotions (the moon) are connected to and influenced by our thoughts.

Are my thoughts my friends? How do my emotions communicate themselves to me? Do I feel better when I am talking to someone else? Do I choose to communicate as a form of self-soothing? What is my preferred form of communication: written, oral, non-verbal, direct or indirect, or perhaps even another mode altogether?

If the moon symbolizes our comfort zone of safety and belonging - then when the Moon is in Gemini we are invited to practice self-study to help understand the motive behind the exchanges we have with other people.

I have personally noticed the urge to send a bunch of texts and messages when Gemini energy is present. I can fly between one conversation and the next with more ease than usual. There is a lightness and playfulness. I also find myself reading multiple books at the same time, cross-referencing them as if they were part of the same text.

In nature, the energy of Gemini is much like a buzzing bee visiting flowers and communicating through the cross-pollination of words and ideas with a wide array of perspectives.

If you are feeling more extroverted this can be like a social butterfly and more introverted would be similar to a book caterpillar. Imagine the sound of birdsongs in an aviary or the insistent tweets of twitter.

When the moon is in Gemini there can be a mood of: “Let’s try something new!” or “I won’t grow up! I don’t want to go to school” Although the energy of Gemini is connected to the love of learning and new experiences, it’s more about exploration than following rules and assigned activities. It is like choosing your own major in the school of life and trying to not go down too many rabbit holes in one day.

The lessons of Gemini include how to harness the mind and not get overwhelmed by too many ideas. Since Mercury is connected to technology we might choose to observe how we use it for distraction or as a tool for connection. See how many “tabs” you have open and if it might be helpful to close them all and start fresh. Notice if there is a fear of forgetting. The archetype of the Moon helps us remember and trust that the thoughts and ideas that matter will come back around again.

Imagine a flock of geese flying in a V-shape with a single point of focus, how might your mind mirror this formation when it begins to get scattered?

Mental stimulation can be overwhelming for some and soothing for others. How do you feel when your mind moves fast, how do you feel when your mind moves more slowly? This is different for every individual, and when the moon is in Gemini it can challenge us to hone our thoughts through skillful practice in a way that supports meaningful relationships with other people, with ideas, and ourselves (including with our own mind). Notice how all of this affects the nervous system.

When you want to slow the mind, breathe more slowly. Extend the exhale to engage the parasympathetic nervous system to calm the flight of Gemini. This is how the element of air can help settle the sands that get stirred up in a whirlwind through breathing more consciously.

self-study noticings

One experiment you can do when the moon is in Gemini is to actively bring attention to your own mind and breath.

  • Describe the mood of the days with the moon in Gemini.

  • Did you observe any themes related to this sign show up in your life?

  • Were there synchronicities that caught your attention?

  • Notice what is true for you through self-study in relationship with cycles.

As you track lunar astrology, a relationship with each sign begins to deepen over time. You many begin to notice patterns related to how you are integrating the lessons of the sign and how this archetypal energy shows up in your life.
